The Curse of the Threequels and Other Movie Review

Monday, July 2, 2007, 04:47 PM MST [Movies]

1408- based on a SHORT story by Stephen King, which means the movie is embellished. Most of what happens in the movie did not happen in the story. When we saw the preview, my husband dug out his copy of "Everything's Eventual", flipped to the story, and I read it. The story is good, the move not so much. Its not a bad flick, but I was most impressed with John Cusack over anything else. He plays Mike Enslin, a writer who specializes in spending the night in and writing about supposed haunted cemetaries, lighthouses, and hotels. Your typical skeptic who becomes a believer. I believed he was terrified and losing his mind. Cusack definantly did his job as a actor. Is it worth paying almost nine bucks to see it?....uh, nah, catch it on streaming like I did, or wait for the vid. (Again, I doubt that Mr. King had all that much to do with this one and it shows).

Hot Fuzz- If you were a fan of "Shaun of the Dead", you will probably like this one, I enjoyed it, but did not find it as funny as Shaun. This is not a sequel to Shaun, new story, new characters, tho they did use some of the same gags. Some faces are familiar from Shaun, like Bill Nighy ( I love him) who played Shaun's step-dad. Our hero is now a super cop, so good he makes everyone look bad and get transferred as a result. He ends up in this small town that has an unusually high rate of "accidental" deaths. But he suspects they are really murders and investigating and car chasing ensues. Im not big on cop movies usually, tho I did kind of like Super Troopers. Hot Fuzz is funny in that special British way.

Shrek the Third-Very funny, but loses some of the momentum it had gained in the first two. Still, I laughed very hard.

Spiderman 3-Great effects, too many damn villains! Did we really need three of them? And so many sub-plots it became confusing, each would have made a good movie on its own. (I smell studio interference, but I guess you have to please the dudes catching the bill too.) Again, not as good as the first two.

Pirates of the Carribean 3-I only really watch these for Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, I must admit. I was disappointed in the brief intro to Jack Sparrows dad played by Keith Richards, and his shrunken headed mother. I was somewhat lost by certain plot elements, and they left several of them hanging unresolved. There was alot of innuendo for a Disney flick (whose spyglass is longer?), I was surprised at that, tho we are dealing with pirates here. And I didnt like the ending, although, in a small way, they left it open for another movie (???) Guess we'll see.

Basically, dont waste your money on any of these at the theatre, unless you enjoy your special effects on the big screen...there are some movies worth going to for that experience, such as the LOTR series...but so many that are not worth it. Im catching my movies for free these days, and Im sure Ill be back to rag on those too...stay tuned.

    Peace,
